Politicians have heard that diesel is bad

According to the diaro El País, the candidate for mayor of Madrid by the PSOE party now in opposition, has promised if he becomes mayor: "elimination or limitation of diesel vehicles in the city with the horizon in 2020 in line with the decision of the City of Paris ". The reality is, in effect, that the air of Madrid is very polluted and is a health problem that requires taking any further action.
Although the PP party still has the responsibility of government in Madrid, can not promise anything so blunt, perhaps for lack of resolve to take the necessary steps really, the fact is that the plan of action in case of contamination which approved the year past (insufficient according to some), and collected in its report that according to studies of the council itself, air pollution with nitrogen oxides in Madrid is due to 98.5% for cars.

The smoke from diesel engines is a carcinogen
The smoke generated by a diesel engine is unhealthy, and you can not argue. In 2012 the World Health Organization as a carcinogen stated otherwise than by cancer grade. Suspended particulates and nitrogen oxides containing exhaust gas of a diesel engine cause cancer.
And with an overwhelming logic, politicians decide they like diesel is bad, forbid diesel. In this case it is a particular party, but this is happening in general, no matter the place or political inclination, as is being seen in different cities and countries in Europe (quickly come to Paris memory or the UK) and up within the European Union as a whole (Parliament and Commission).
Nitrogen oxides and particulates are substances of concern
Yes, the smoke generated by a diesel engine is bad, but you can not simplify and generalize both the issue. Of course choices as suppression would be clearly unjust. Thankfully, at least the promise also includes the option of limitation, it seems hinting that could allow a detailed study, not simply ban period.
And what happens next, and it is not clear that politicians are aware of this: not all cars with diesel engines pollute the same, and in fact, not all gasoline cars pollute the same.
Seat Leon Smoke NegroUn diesel car with similar emissions DEFINITELY should be banned
But not all diesel cars are equal
It turns out that diesel cars sold in Europe are now diesel cars cleaner and less polluting than Europe has seen in its history. The European anti-pollution standard Euro 6 and force, imposes limits on emissions to very low diesel cars, which differ very little from those of a gasoline car.
We are talking in cars diesel 0.080 g / km for oxides of nitrogen and 0.005 g / km for the suspended particles, while for gasoline cars we're talking about 0.060 g / km and 0.005 g / km, respectively .
You can not generalize diesel car without further
A car diesel Euro 2 or Euro 3 (or even Euro 4, although somewhat less), yes that pollutes a lot. But a diesel car Euro 5 and Euro 6 still pollute less.
To the exhaust pipe of a diesel car do not protrude limit pollutants, besides certain strategies in the engine itself, the most important is filtering exhaust gases through a catalytic converter, the selective catalytic reduction and filter particle. Elements certainly increase the price of the car, and are not exempt from certain drawbacks, but work, work.

What about gasoline engines with direct injection?
Moreover, as we said before, not all gasoline cars pollute the same. In fact it is known that gasoline direct injection generate more polluting than traditional indirect injection, the very standard with Euro already collected.
Gasoline cars also pollute
Indeed, a study by TÜV Nord in Germany concluded that modern petrol engines generate more direct injection diesel particulate modern cars. The study raised some controversy, and we, as we had the opportunity, try to compare their findings.
One of the engines that were included in the study was Ford, and when we had the opportunity to interview the director of research and advanced engineering for Ford of Europe, among other things asked if the findings of this study TÜV were correct or not. And the answer was clear: yes, it is true, there is nothing to discuss the study (although we punctuated that the number of particles was negligible).

So we would very much like politicians of all parties, to best inform these issues before making simplistic and generalized measures. To begin with we consider vital to car manufacturers inform us in detail of all polluting emissions generated each of their models.
Not only can one speak of carbon dioxide, nor can you be so simplistic as banning diesel. Neither can be as simplistic as raising taxes on diesel, since it is a clean fuel, if the reality is that pollution also depends on the engine and the car, and with the same fuel have cars that pollute much and cars that pollute very little.
It is a complex problem that requires a complex solution and in which the only fair that every car as it actually contaminated with or without restrictions to circulate in this or that place, or pay more or less taxes.
Incidentally, for the city to have a very low cost per km, to have zero local emissions, but also figures lower global emissions (of course in Spain and in Europe) and to avoid problems with particulate filters that clog and do not regenerate, the best are the electric cars (even without being perfect and several areas for improvement, which are already improving).
